After successfully occupy a position as the second largest operator by subscribers after Telkomsel, XL Axiata PT Tbk (XL) more aggressively building its infrastructure network. To enhance its Internet service, this time XL build undersea fiber-optic cable.
To work on this project, XL took Telekom Malaysia Berhad and PT Mora Telematics Indonesia. The project, called The Batam Dumai Melaka Cable System (BDM) is an investment suck up to 7 million U.S. dollars. The technology used is the technology of Huawei Marine Network (HMN).
"Demand for fast internet access service and higher quality. Cooperation projects submarine optical fiber cable is a guarantee for customers in the best internet service availability in the future," said VP of Commerce NetCo XL, Habib Mustain, last week.
According to Habib, the network will connect the network BDM XL with Telekom Malaysia-owned network that has been connected with the international Internet network to Europe, Japan, the United States, and a number of Asian and African countries. That way, the quality of an international link connections more secure.
Technically, BDM system consists of two pairs of optical fibers that are designed to provide a bandwidth of 1.28 Tbps, among others, with the latest Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), which can increase transmission capacity and performance.
BDM project will link the distance along the 400 kilometers which includes the Melaka and Melaka-Dumai-Batam. Landing station in Melaka will be managed by Telekom Malaysia, while in Batam and Dumai by XL. The project is targeted to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2011.
The presence of BDM will complement large-capacity network systems that previously existing in the region. Previously, XL also has collaborated in the development and operation of network systems Batam Rengit Cable System (BRCS). Currently XL Internet subscribers has reached 27 million from 40.4 million
